Once Upon A Time
In a land not so far away, it was National Storytelling Week
Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin… Children (and grown-ups) have for years been entertained by folk tales and fairy stories, myths, legends and you-couldn’t-make-it-up anecdotes. A good story-teller can conjure up wonder and excitement, creativity and curiosity, weaving a thread of colourful magic into your imagination. Remember Jim Henson’s fantastical The Storyteller? We used to sit enraptured as children, while John Hurt’s character spun his fireside tales about witches and hedgehogs and people being turned into crows.
Which is why, from 30 January to 6 February, National Storytelling Week is holding a celebration of story-telling in all its forms, with events taking place at libraries, museums, bookshops, theatres, schools and hospitals all over the country. The aim is to help promote the traditional way of communicating life stories and sparking imagination.
And as it’s been 150 years since one of our best loved story-tellers, Lewis Carroll, wrote the timeless Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, the British Library is holding an Alice in Wonderland Discovery Day on Saturday 20 February to tie in with their Alice exhibition. For this free-entry event, kids will be encouraged to dress up for a day of Alice-inspired antics. They’ll get to meet some of her fabulous friends and wonderfully wicked foes, take part in drawing, collage and crochet workshops, enjoy theatrical performances and indulge in scrumptious (Eat Me/Drink Me) treats.
You can even create your own Alice-inspired play time at home, and let your little ones read, listen or spin their own tall-tale of adventure. Curioser and curioser…

We love to review toys for Busy Bird - but sometimes the best review is just watching a child open the toy and play with it, that way you get their honest reaction. And this is just what happened when we were asked to be part of an 'unboxing' for goodtoknow.co.uk recently. Let's just say Wet Head is no fun when it's Mummy's head getting wet...
